Biography

True dedication

Jesper Hedegaard is a pianist, composer, producer, and bandleader, and one of Denmark’s most dedicated interpreters of Brazilian music. Since the mid-1970s, he has worked extensively within the genre, developing a rare and authentic connection to its cultural and musical roots – most notably through 12 years as a resident musician in Brazil.

“Beyond his undeniable talent, Jesper Hedegaard plays with the most essential element required to interpret it: passion. He is a true ambassador of the genre, keeping its rich nuances alive in Europe. Brazil is grateful.” – Guilherme Vergueiro, one of Brazil’s finest pianists

When Jesper heard Brazilian music for the first time at the age of 16, he got goosebumps – “it felt like déjà vu.” It was his best friend who played vinyl records by Sergio Mendes and João Gilberto for him. He instantly fell in love, and that moment sparked a lifelong dedication to mastering the art of Brazilian music. Now, Jesper desires for his audiences to be moved, just as he is.

Jesper Hedegaard has performed internationally and collaborated with a wide range of Brazil’s most renowned musicians, including Miúcha, Zezé Motta, and members of bands associated with Djavan and Ivan Lins. In 1987, he was awarded the Troféu Caymmi in Salvador, Bahia, in recognition of his work.

“A wonderful evening … Brazilian music that raised the temperature and transported the audience straight to Rio. Jesper Hedegaard is a great master and composer.” – Thorsten Rasmussen, Chairman of Hornbæk Jazz Club

His performances are characterized by intensity, musicality, and a strong connection with the audience. With a repertoire spanning bossa nova, samba, choro, and baião, he builds a bridge between tradition and the present, creating a vibrant live experience.

“For me, it’s about creating a space where the audience can feel the pulse and warmth of the music. When I see them moved or sense their enthusiasm after the concert, I know we’ve built a bridge to Brazil together.” – Jesper Hedegaard

Today, Jesper Hedegaard leads several projects, including BrasilExperience, Dominique & BrasilExperience, and two collaborative projects, Brazilian Crosswinds and Nordic Brazilian Duo, continuing to develop and present Brazilian music to international audiences. His latest album, Frutos do Nagé (2025), marks another highlight in his artistic career.

“Elegant, beautiful, and full of joy – Brazilian music conveyed with great conviction.” – Pia Blom, Giant Steps
